This issue ripped out my heart, gave it a big ol’ hug, and handed it back to me. And that really doesn’t feel like much of an exaggeration. It made me cry, it made me smile, and it gave me hope. I can’t believe how they were able to wrap this miniseries up. I honestly had expected…well any of it, truth be told. I honestly had expected…well any of it, truth be told. At first I had been a little concerned about some of the backstory alternations being made with Captain Marvel. They were tame enough changes where I was mostly okay with them (I could wrap my head around the logic AND argue that these changes had always been truth – just not a truth we knew) but still, change can be scary, yeah? But the more I read the more compelling I found the plot to be. It was so intense and so well written. This miniseries did an absolutely wonderful job reminding us that while Captain Marvel may be a superhero, she’s also a person. A person with complex feelings and hopes and dreams. A person with faults. Sometimes I think we need those reminders, but especially so after a major event like Civil War II (I know, I know – it’s been over a year, but some of us all still recovering over here!). This issue wrapped up most of the questions and concerns I had – and then some. I’ll admit that I didn’t see this particular conclusion coming…but it fits. So did all of the flashbacks that they chose to include in it. It’s sad to see Margaret Stohl leaving Captain Marvel. She did so much for the character, and us fans will never forget that. At the same time I respect and understand that creative teams do get switched around for series. After all, how else could Margaret Stohl have been given a chance, if not for the line of previous authors stepping aside for her?

The perfect wrap up to a perfect series. The art is phenomenal and the story is incredible, both packed with emotion and power that I hope gets translated to the upcoming movie.

It took me a bit to warm to this retcon of Carol Danvers’ origin, but in the end I love it. This origin is so much more satisfying than the original, and hopefully, with the reckoning with her past that occurs over this 5 issue arc we’re going to start seeing a less broken Carol than we’ve seen so much of in the recent past.

Great wrap up to the "new" origin of Captain Marvel. Can't wait to start Kelly Thompson's run now!
